British R&B newcomer Estelle crashed onto the U.K. chart at No. 1 yesterday (March 23) with her single featuring Kanye West, "American Boy" (Homeschool/Atlantic). It's the 28-year-old's first domestic top 10 hit. Meanwhile, Duffy's "Rockferry" (A&M/Universal) started a third week as Britain's best-selling album.
Estelle had scored three U.K. top 40 hits in a previous deal with V2, "1980" and "Free" in 2004 and "Go Gone" the following year, but had never risen higher than No. 14. The new single is from her album "Shine," out next Monday (31), which also features collaborations with John Legend, Cee-Lo and Kardinal Offishal.
"American Boy" ended Duffy's five-week run at the top of the singles chart with "Mercy," which fell to No. 2 as Leona Lewis dipped 2-3 with "Better in Time"/"Fooprints in the Sand" (Syco Music/Sony BMG). "Low" (Atlantic) by Flo Rida featuring T-Pain rose 7-6 and "4 Minutes" (Warner Bros.) by Madonna featuring Justin Timberlake debuted at No. 7.
Utah Saints' "Something Good 08" (Data) climbed again, 9-8, as did Girls Aloud's "Can't Speak French" (Fascination/Polydor/Universal), 16-9. The new chart also contained a new entry for English band Guillemots at No. 20 with "Get Over It" (Polydor/Universal), from their new album "Red," out today.
On the album chart, Duffy held off the challenge of multi-platinum British rock outfit Muse, whose live album "Haarp" (Helium 3/Warner Bros.) debuted at No. 2. OneRepublic's "Dreaming Out Loud" (Interscope) fell one place from its No. 2 debut and Manchester band Elbow's fourth album, "The Seldom Seen Kid" (Fiction/Polydor/Universal) entered at No. 5, a career-best.
There was a No. 6 start for Bryan Adams' "11" (Polydor/Universal), and top 10 debuts for two more Universal-signed veterans: Mike Oldfield with "Music of the Spheres" (UCJ) at No. 9 and Van Morrison with "Keep It Simple" (Exile/Polydor) at No. 10.
Amy Winehouse's "Back to Black" (Universal Island) is in its 11th aggregate week atop Billboard's European Top 100 Albums, while Duffy's "Mercy" moved 2-1 to take the lead on the Eurochart Hot 100 Singles roundup.
